DÍA INTERNACIONAL DE LOS MONUMENTOS Y SITIOS

El 18 de abril se celebró el Día Internacional de los Monumentos y Sitios. Esta celebración lleva en el calendario desde 1984 y fue impulsada por el Consejo Internacional de Monumentos y Sitios (ICOMOS) junto con la aprobación de la UNESCO.

Esta efeméride tiene como objetivo sensibilizar y dar a conocer la riqueza que posee la humanidad en cuanto a patrimonios históricos, así como fomentar su conservación y protección.

El lema de este Día Internacional en el año 2023 en el que nos encontramos es “Patrimonio en transformación”. Cada uno de los lemas se adapta al contexto histórico y social que viven los Monumentos y Sitios cada año. Recordando algunos lemas anteriores, se encuentra el de “Patrimonio y Clima” en 2022, “Pasados complejos, futuros diversos” en 2021 o “Paisajes Rurales” en 2019.

Sin embargo, el lema de este año pretende visibilizar las formas en las que el patrimonio puede ofrecer estrategias para la acción climática inclusiva, transformadora y justa. ICOMOS promueve, de esta manera, el conocimiento de cómo los sistemas y formas tradicionales de la cultura se vinculan con la acción climática y cómo una perspectiva del patrimonio cultural puede llegar a apoyar la protección de las comunidades vulnerables.

Algunos monumentos y sitios presentan miles de años de antigüedad, llegando incluso a equipararse con la existencia de los seres humanos. Todos ellos tienen una gran importancia simbólica que destaca por su significación. Los monumentos cuentan con miles de visitas al año, lo que permite hacernos recordar o conocer momentos no vividos.

The International Day for Monuments and Sites was celebrated on April 18. This celebration has been on the calendar since 1984 and was promoted by the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) with the approval of UNESCO.

This event aims to raise awareness and publicize the wealth that humanity possesses in terms of historical heritage, as well as to promote its conservation and protection.

The theme of this International Day in the year 2023 in which we find ourselves is “Heritage in transformation”. Each of the slogans is adapted to the historical and social context experienced by the Monuments and Sites each year. Recalling some previous slogans, there is “Heritage and Climate” in 2022, “Complex Pasts, Diverse Futures” in 2021 or “Rural Landscapes” in 2019.

However, this year’s theme aims to make visible the ways in which heritage can offer strategies for inclusive, transformative and just climate action. ICOMOS thus promotes awareness of how traditional systems and forms of culture link to climate action and how a cultural heritage perspective can come to support the protection of vulnerable communities.

Some monuments and sites are thousands of years old, even dating back to the existence of human beings. All of them have great symbolic importance that stands out for their significance. Monuments are visited by thousands of people every year, allowing us to remember or learn about unlived moments.
