Tal día como hoy en 1740, nació Jeanne Baret en La Comelle, Francia. Como botánica, dedicó toda su vida a explorar terrenos en busca de nuevas especies vegetales.
A su vez, fue la primera mujer en dar la vuelta al mundo con la expedición de Bougainville -militar que protagonizó la primera circunnavegación francesa- de 1766 a 1769. Se vio obligada a disfrazarse de marinero y a alistarse a la expedición con el nombre masculino de Jean Baret para poder dedicarse a lo que más amaba: la investigación de nuevas especies botánicas.
Aprovechamos esta efeméride para presentar el Objetivo de Desarrollo Sostenible número 5: Igualdad de Género. Con él, se pretende conseguir la eliminación de la discriminación por cuestión de género, erradicando la violencia y la brecha salarial, entre otras metas.
Desde la Cátedra Unesco Forum Universidad y Patrimonio Cultural agradecemos la oceánica valentía de estas mujeres, que nos recuerdan que jugamos un papel fundamental en la investigación.
253 años después, sabemos que las mujeres no necesitan ningún tipo de disfraz para disfrutar de todo lo explorado. Seguimos a bordo de una expedición que pretende alcanzar uno de los objetivos más deseados de la Agenda 2030.

JEANNE BARET: A BRAVE FEMALE OCEAN EXPLORER
Today in 1740, Jeanne Baret was born in La Comelle, France. As a botanist, she dedicated her entire life to exploring the land in search of new plant species.
Furthermore, she was the first woman to circumnavigate the world with Bougainville's expedition - a military man who led the first French circumnavigation - from 1766 to 1769. She was forced to dressed herself as a sailor man and join the expedition under the male name of Jean Baret in order to devote herself to what she loved most: researching new botanical species.
We would like to take this opportunity to present Sustainable Development Goal number 5: Gender Equality. It aims to achieve the elimination of gender discrimination, eradicating violence and the wage gap, among other goals.
From the UNESCO Chair Forum University and Cultural Heritage we are grateful for the oceanic courage of these women, who remind us that we play a fundamental role in research.
253 years later, we know that women do not need any kind of disguise to enjoy everything explored. We are still on board an expedition that aims to achieve one of the most desired goals of the 2030 Agenda.
