NUEVO ACTO VANDÁLICO CONTRA EL ARTE

La obra del pintor barroco Don Diego Velázquez ha sido agredida por dos miembros del movimiento ecologista “Just Stop Oil”, que se opone al uso de combustibles fósiles.

El pasado lunes 6 de noviembre se filtraba el vídeo de los dos individuos que, con un martillo, han quebrado este mismo lunes por la mañana, a golpes, el cristal que protege el cuadro La Venus del espejo, que se encuentra expuesta en la National Gallery de Londres. Actualmente, la obra se encuentra en la pinacoteca para ser analizada tras los daños.

Al mismo tiempo que se producía este acto vandálico en el museo, numerosos activistas pertenecientes a la misma organización, fueron detenidos cerca de la pinacoteca, cuando protestaban con una marcha lenta que había obstaculizado el tráfico en una calle donde se encuentran los principales ministerios y edificios gubernamentales.

Los activistas que entraron en el museo, de 20 y 22 años, han llevado a cabo este acto vandálico con la excusa de la reclamación de la detención de nuevos proyectos petroleros y gasísticos para frenar el cambio climático. Al grito de “La política nos está fallando”, justificaban este ataque poco antes de sentarse en el suelo y esperar a ser detenidos.

Los dos jóvenes, han hecho referencia a la vinculación de su acción con otro ataque sufrido por la misma obra en 1914, cuando el cuadro fue golpeado con un hacha por la sufragista canadiense Mary Richardson, que protestaba por el encarcelamiento de feministas en el Reino Unido.

El personal de la National Gallery, desalojó rápidamente al resto de visitantes de la sala y retuvieron a los ecologistas hasta que llegó la policía y pudieron retirar el cuadro, el cual, se encuentra siendo examinado por los conservadores del museo.

Es una realidad devastadora, la rápida aceleración del cambio climático, que afecta a nivel mundial a todos los campos y disciplinas, empezando por la naturaleza y los recursos naturales. Sin embargo, la solución no se encuentra en la realización de actos vandálicos a una historia del arte que forma parte de la identidad de la sociedad.

The work of the Baroque painter Don Diego Velázquez has been attacked by two members of the environmental movement “Just Stop Oil”, which opposes the use of fossil fuels.
Last Monday, November 6, a video was leaked of the two individuals who, with a hammer, have broken this Monday morning, with blows, the glass that protects the painting The Venus in the Mirror, which is on display at the National Gallery in London. Currently, the work is in the gallery to be analyzed after the damage.
At the same time that this act of vandalism took place in the museum, numerous activists belonging to the same organization were arrested near the gallery, when they protested with a slow march that had obstructed traffic on a street where the main ministries and government buildings are located.
The activists who entered the museum, aged 20 and 22, have carried out this act of vandalism under the excuse of demanding the halt of new oil and gas projects to curb climate change. Shouting “Politics is failing us”, they justified this attack shortly before sitting on the ground and waiting to be arrested.

The two young men have made reference to the link of their action with another attack suffered by the same work in 1914, when the painting was hit with an axe by the Canadian suffragette Mary Richardson, who was protesting against the imprisonment of feminists in the United Kingdom.
The National Gallery staff quickly cleared the remaining visitors from the room and held the environmentalists until the police arrived and were able to remove the painting, which is now being examined by the museum’s curators.
It is a devastating reality, the rapid acceleration of climate change, which affects all fields and disciplines worldwide, starting with nature and natural resources. However, the solution does not lie in vandalizing an art history that is part of society’s identity.
