CONFERENCIA DEL DECENIO DEL OCÉANO 2024

La semana pasada, del 10 al 12 de abril, se celebró en Barcelona la esperada Conferencia del Decenio del Océano 2024. Este encuentro fue organizado por la Comisión Oceanográfica Intergubernamental de la UNESCO (COI/UNESCO) y reunió a más de 1500 participantes de 124 países distintos; 3000 telespectadores y 120 eventos satélite. Se trata así, de la culminación de la Semana del Decenio del Océano.

El resultado de este encuentro internacional se materializa en la Declaración de Barcelona, documento que identifica las prioridades para la generación de conocimientos y ciencia en el marco de la disciplina oceánica. Además, el Ayuntamiento y el Puerto de Barcelona, se han comprometido a crear un Centro de Colaboración del Decenio, dedicado específicamente a la economía azul.

Entre los retos que se pretenden abordar en los próximos años, se encuentra el diseño y la entrega de la ciencia y el conocimiento para entender la distribución global, la salud humana, los impactos de la contaminación marina en los ecosistemas, así como fortalecer la producción sostenible de alimentos acuáticos, fomentando proyectos de economía oceánica sostenibles al clima que permitan la vigilancia.

Esta conferencia abarcó una amplia gama de temas divididos en cuatro pilares principales: ciencia y soluciones para un océano limpio, sano y resiliente; ciencia y soluciones para una economía oceánica sostenible y resiliente; ciencia y soluciones para un océano seguro y predecible; y un océano inspirador y atractivo para todos.

A su vez, una de las acciones más importantes es la de la transmisión y divulgación de conocimiento, haciendo especial hincapié en la infancia y juventud, quienes conforman el futuro de la sociedad. De esta manera, este encuentro resalta la importancia de proyectos que puedan traducir un mensaje claro a los más jóvenes, creando una conciencia sostenible que pueda proyectarse hacia un futuro mejor.

Last week, from April 10-12, the long-awaited Decade of the Ocean 2024 Conference was held in Barcelona. This meeting was organized by the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO (IOC/UNESCO) and brought together more than 1500 participants from 124 different countries; 3000 viewers and 120 satellite events. It was the culmination of the Decade of the Ocean Week.

The result of this international meeting is the Barcelona Declaration, a document that identifies the priorities for the generation of knowledge and science within the framework of the ocean discipline. In addition, the City Council and the Port of Barcelona have committed to create a Decade Collaboration Center, specifically dedicated to the blue economy.

Among the challenges to be addressed in the coming years are the design and delivery of science and knowledge to understand global distribution, human health, the impacts of marine pollution on ecosystems, as well as strengthening sustainable aquatic food production, fostering climate-sustainable ocean economy projects that enable monitoring.

This conference covered a wide range of topics divided into four main pillars: science and solutions for a clean, healthy and resilient ocean; science and solutions for a sustainable and resilient ocean economy; science and solutions for a safe and predictable ocean; and an inspiring and attractive ocean for all.
In turn, one of the most important actions is the transmission and dissemination of knowledge, with special emphasis on children and youth, who make up the future of society. In this way, this meeting highlights the importance of projects that can translate a clear message to the youngest, creating a sustainable conscience that can be projected towards a better future.
